Often this war gets compared to Vietnam, but obviously the number of fatalities is significantly lower than that of Nam (58k). However, the number of wounded soldiers is very high (over 100,000 veteran disability claims as of June 2006, probably even higher at this point. This is compared to the 200k+ from Vietnam).
I think we can thank modern science for making this waste of a war less costly in (American) lives. If this war had occured in the 60s-70s, like Vietnam, it's quite possible we'd be looking at 20k+ dead.
